She had a wooden box of resonance with lateral walls, ending with two curved, flat arms connected by a bar called a yoke. The strands of plant fibers in the number 3 to 12 were wound on one side of the yoke, and on the other one was mounted on the bottom of the resonance box. They were torn off with a plate (plectrum). Kitara used to accompaniment in singing as well as for solo play. Singing with her was called a genius. It was one of the most popular instruments of ancient Greece and outside of this country she did not play a greater role in Europe.
A variation of the guitar was with more strings forming (φόρμιγξ phórminks, complement φόρμιγγος phórmingos), used by Homer.
