Niccolò Piccinino

He was born in a butcher's family. In his youth, he joined the convent of Braccio da Montone, who became his testimony. After Braccio's death at the Battle of Aquila in 1424, Piccinino became commander of the condotta, a mercenary division of Braccio da Montone. After a brief period of service in Florence, in 1425 Piccinino went with his detachment to the service of the ruler of Milan Filippo Visconti. With another connoisseur, Niccolò Fortebraccio, nephew of Braccio, played an important role in the Lombard war. In the Battle of Delebio (1432), fighting with the Venetians, on the side of which another famous conqueror, Bartolomeo Colleoni, was commanding, he commanded Milan. After the death of Fortebraccia he became the leader of the Visconti army and fought with Francesco Sforza, commanding the papal army. In 1438, due to another condottier - Caramuccia da Forlì, ineffectively besieged Brescia.
