Gaspar de Carvajal
Gaspar de Carvajal (born 1504, died 1584) is a Spanish Dominican priest, traveler and explorer, chronicler.
Gaspar de Carvajal was from Extremadura. He was a Dominican from Volladolid Monastery and from 1538 the Province of Dominican in Lima. He participated in the expedition of Francis Pizarra to Peru, he was chaplain Gonzal Pizarro. In 1541 he participated in the expedition of the latter and Francis de Orellana in search of Eldorado. On December 26, 1541, the expedition for lack of food broke up and Carvajal and Orellana went down the Rio Napo River to the Indians. When they reached the villages, they supplied food supplies, but were unable to swim up to the mighty river. Orellana decided to go along with the current of the river to the east. In this way Orellana's team encountered friendly and unfriendly Indians with whom he fought. In June they reached a village inhabited by female warriors - Gaspar found that they had found the mythical Amazon. During the fight with them, Gaspar lost his eye. Expedition on 26 August 1542 reached the sea and it was the first expedition that made the Amazon raft into the Atlantic Ocean. Orellano went to Spain and Gaspar de Carvajal from Margarita Island returned to Peru, where he died at the Santo Domingo monastery in Lima. Bibliography Authoritative control (person):
