Ludwig Diehl


Ludwig Diehl (born 16 December 1876 in Tübingen, died 31 January 1945 in Ketrzyn) is a German physician, first hospital director in Kętrzyn (1908-1945).

Luwig Diehl was educated in Leipzig - a high school and medical school he graduated in 1901. His first job was at the Kirchenheim hospital and later as a naval physician he was swimming on the South American lines. In 1903 he returned to Germany, and in 1904 in Chemnitz he specialized in surgery and gynecology. He later worked at the hospital in Oberhausen.

On August 8, 1908 he became director of the hospital in Kętrzyn. Under his management the hospital was expanded and became a modern healing plant. The hospital was equipped with an X-ray camera, one of the first in the province. As a result of the extension (from 1919 to 1935) the hospital had an increase in the number of beds from 60 to 180.

Ludwig Diehl's merits related to the development of the hospital were honored on December 16, 1926 with the name of one of the streets of the then-present city (now Szpitalna Street). Dr. Ludwig Diehl as proof of achievements in the field of medicine development on December 16, 1936 received the title of professor. His mission as a doctor and director ended on January 27, 1945, when the Red Army entered the city. After the murder of some patients and raped nurses by the victorious soldiers prof. Diehl on January 31, 1945 committed suicide. On the same day he was buried in a collective grave together with about 30 nurses. The grave is near the hospital.

Memory prof. Dr. Ludwig Diehl was honored by the City Council of Ketrzyn by the resolution No. XXXVII / 279/01 dated 23 May 2001 naming his name part of ul. Park in Kętrzyn.

In the war cemetery at the hospital in Kętrzyn on June 4, 2008 the monument to the murdered was unveiled. On the tables in Polish and German, the name of Ludwig Diehl was placed. Bibliography
