N-Acetylotransferaza serotoninowa

N-Acetyltransferase (AANAT) - (EC 2.3.1.87) enzyme involved in the melatonin biosynthesis pathway from serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine). Catalyzes the N-acetylation of serotonin resulting in N-acetylserothonin, whose O-methylation catalyzed by 5-hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase leads to the formation of melatonin, the end product of this pathway. It is encoded by the human AANAT gene on 17q25 chromosome, which translates into a 23 kDa molecule. It is relatively conservative in evolution, its amino acid sequence in sheep and rats is 80% identical to human.
