Synagogue in Ostia

Synagogue in Ostia - an ancient synagogue located in Ostia in Italy, lying at the mouth of the Tiber.

The synagogue was discovered in 1961 and partially reconstructed. During the excavations a relief was found with menorahs and lamps, which enabled the building to be identified. The ruins date back to the 4th century, but the previous building phases are clear. The oldest is from the time of Emperor Claudius (41-54), but it is not known whether the building was already used as a synagogue.

The building consists of a main hall with benches on three sides. It has a monumental entrance with 4 columns and triclinium. The main entrance is to the south-east, in the direction of Jerusalem. Literature
