art for art
Art for art (l'art pour l'art), also art is an end in itself - a slogan propagated by some Polish and European modernists.
He first used it in 1818 in his book On the Truth, on the Good and the Beautiful, Victor Cousin. The slogan was an expression of opposition to utilitarianism in art, fulfilling it by others in addition to aesthetic functions. The work was to be perfect in its form, without attributing excessive tone, eg educational or political. This concept is reflected in the views of many writers and philosophers.
The representatives of this trend were, among others. Oscar Wilde, Théophile Gautier and Stanisław Przybyszewski in Poland (eg Confiteor), Zenon Przesmycki.
