Ibeji
Ibeja figures Ibeja - the beliefs of Jorubs from Nigeria the guardian god of twins. The people of Yoruba believed that the twins were endowed with one, undivided soul. When, for any reason, one of them died, the mother commissioned the artists to perform two figurines, also called ibeja. According to the beliefs of Jorubes, this ensured the further existence of a dead child who, living in a wooden figure, could participate in the life of his mirror image. With the figurine the twins were treated in the same way as the living child - it was washed, fed, dressed, rubbed with oil.
