USS American (1861)
USS American - a barge with a displacement of 329 tons, was a whaling ship. It was purchased November 1, 1861 in Edgartown, Massachusetts for Stone Fleet for $ 3370. He left New Bedford (Massachusetts) on November 20, 1861 and was supposed to be self-inflicted to block the main channel leading to the Charleston port on December 20, 1861. The name of the unit is sometimes referred to as "America." Initially planned to sink in the port of Savannah, but as the whaling units began arriving at this port, they found that the Confederates had been alerted by the capture by the Union Army of Port Royal. They decided to evacuate Tybee Island and transfer batteries to Fort Pulaski. In addition to stopping the North Ships from firing the old fortress close to them, they drowned the old hulls in the key place of the canal and themselves did what the Stone Fleet did. As a result, the unionists sailed with American "sail" and most of the others, 10 and 11 December, to Port Royal. Flag Officer DuPont decided to use them to block the navigable channel leading to the port of Charleston. The units went there and on December 20, 1861 "American" was sunk in the waters of the main channel. Bibliography
