Karakuma is a sandy desert in Kazakhstan, northeast of Lake Aral, with an area of ​​approximately 35-40 thousand. km². At its southern end flows the Syr-daria river. The maximum summer temperatures reach +35 ° C (highest recorded +43 ° C), winter to -10 ° C (minimum nights to -25 ° C, lowest recorded -42 ° C). With the disappearance of the Aral Sea, the desert area continued to grow, only the construction of the Karkkar dam, which was to save the North Sea, prevented its further growth.

In the Kazakh, Uzbek and Turkic languages, Kara-kum means "black sands": punishment = "black".

In the older literature, the desert is called Kara-kum Nadaralski.
