Mijikenda
Mijikenda (Wamijikenda) - a group of nine tribes (Digo, Chonyi, Kambe, Duruma, Kauma, Ribe, Rabai, Jibana and Giriama), inhabiting the coasts of Kenya, southern Somalia and northern Tanzania. This name means "nine cities" in Swahili and has been used since the 1940s. The earlier name Nyika / Wanyika ("people from the provinces" or "bush people") is considered obsolete and politically incorrect.
The different tribes are culturally similar and use the same bantu language as the santas.
Due to drought and famine at the end of the 19th century (1898-1900), Miyazaki moved to its present headquarters from the sparsely populated areas of Mombasa and Malindi. Their original homeland is not exactly known. Myths of the people of Maidikidai speak of the origin of the Shungway country in present-day Somalia, whose existence has not been historically confirmed. Mijikendaes used to live in fortified villages in the forests called kaya, which are now considered as the headquarters of the ancestors. In 2008, they were listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
