Sergio Cresto
Sergio Cresto (born 19 January 1956, 2 May 1986) is a rally pilot. In his career he has been on the right-hand side with such drivers as Antonio Tognana, Andrea Zanussi, Jean-Claude Andruet, Attilio Bettega and Henri Toivonen. He died in the most puzzling accident in the history of car rallies.
On 2 May 1986 Fin Henri Toivonen and Italian Sergio Cresto set off for the second stage of the 30th Corsican Rally with a semifinal win over Bruno Saba. Suddenly, for unknown reasons, the Lancia Delta S4 flew off the left turn and fell off the escarpment. The car "dived" and hit his back against the tree, falling to the roof. Delta S4 had a fuel tank located under the seat of the driver, who broke up after contacting the car with the trees. Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto were pinned down, they had no chance of getting out of the burning vehicle quickly. They both burned alive. There are no witnesses to this day (there is no witness in the vicinity of the accident, only a video showing a few kilometers of smoke and a fireball escaping from the trees). After the rally, Walter Röhrl admitted that Toivonen was taking flu medicines and that this could be crucial to the accident.
