Avalon (Peninsula)
Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland and Labrador is a peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, Newfoundland and Labrador. It is home to the largest population density in the island, inhabiting about 40% of the island population. The Avalon Peninsula is also home to Saint John's Island. Avalon is connected to the main part of the island by a narrow passage of 5 km. In the Atlantic Ocean around the peninsula there are fisheries, the largest of which is the Grand Banks. Local fishermen are home to four natural peninsula bays: Trinity, Conception, Saint Mary's and Placentia.
The Avalon Peninsula was one of the first permanent settlements in North America. The first settlement, Cuper's Cove, was founded in 1610.
