Cytology


Cytology, or cell biology (the term kytos - cell and logos - science) - is the study of the internal structure and function of the basic building block of organisms, the cell. Every plant and animal organism consists of cells. There are organisms composed of only one cell (single cell) and organisms consisting of large numbers of cells (multicellular cells). Cytology is closely related to tissue science - histology.

Cytology is the common definition of cytological examination, which is a screening test for cervical cancer. It is based on the perception of Papanicolaou from the beginning of the last century.

Cytological examination allows early diagnosis of precocious cervical cancer. This is based on the microscopic assessment of the smear taken from the disc and cervical canal. The examination is not painful. As every gynecological examination does so and it requires the woman to general relax. Cytology should not be performed earlier than 4 days after menstruation and no later than 4 days before the next menstrual period. The best time to perform a cytological examination is between the 10th and 18th day of the menstrual cycle.
