Life capacity
Basic volume and lung capacity. Legend TLC - total lung capacity VC - living capacity RV - volume remaining IC - inspiratory volume FRC - functional capacity IRV - backup volume of inspiration TV - breathing volume ERV - spare exhaust volume
Vital capacity (VC) - the largest volume of air that can be blown from the lungs after maximum inhalation.
While breathing quietly, we get some air volume, the so-called "tidal volume". At any time, however, we can do a deeper breath by taking additionally the so-called inspirational backup volume (IRV inspiratory reserve volume). Similarly, while breathing quietly, we can deepen exhale with the so-called ERV expiratory reserve volume. The sum of these 3 components (TV, ERV and IRV) is the living capacity. We define life expectancy during spirometry. Bibliography
