Ugoda of Cavour
The settlement with Cavour or the Treaty of Cavour (Traité de Cavour) is a peace treaty concluded on June 5, 1561, which guarantees the freedom of religion for the first time.
Prince Savoy Emanuel Filibert, under the pressure of King Philip II of Spain, has intensified repression against the Waldensians living in Sabaudia and Piedmont since 1559. The Prince managed to destroy only isolated valdens settlements in the lowlands. Most of the valdens effectively defended themselves in the inaccessible valleys of the Alps against the princes, and the prince was obliged to grant them the right to organize public service in the outermost towns (Angrogne, Villesche, Les Coppiers). This was the first of several legal acts that enabled the survival of this religious group.
