Character class (computer RPG) or profession (role playing) - defining the main occupation (time of occupation) of a player character. An example of such a profession would be a warrior or magician in fantasy systems, as well as a hacker or security guard in cyberpunk and futuristic systems. It describes the skills and knowledge that a player plays in a given system. This makes it possible to standardize the general characteristics of a given group of characters. Often, a character in a given occupation at the time of creation can not have skills typical of other occupations (such as a warrior will not be able to cast spells at the beginning of the game, but may learn this with the development of the character). Professions can also influence the plot of the game sometimes.

In some skill based games, there is no division into professions or classes, the character of the player is not determined by the profession and the player can create skills in a more casual way.
