Werther Effect - Significant increase in suicide due to media coverage of suicide of a well known person. Information about suicides and their descriptions in the media may cause imitation. This also applies to small communities (eg schools) and families (family suicide increases the likelihood that another person commits suicide).

The name comes from the title character of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's novel The Suffering of the Young Werther.
