Madonna canonical van der Paele
Madonna canon van der Paele - oil painting by the Dutch painter Jan van Eyck from 1436. Currently located in the Groeningemuseum in Bruges.
The work depicts Mary on the throne in the vicinity of St. Donald, the patron saint of the Church of Sint Donaas in Bruges, for whom the picture was ordered (left), and the donor, canon van der Paele, together with St. George - his patron (right). The scene takes place in the chancel of the church (the back is visible ambit). This is one of the first Sacra Conversazione compositions. fragment - Eve
Items that decorate the show are not accidental. One should look at the hidden symbolism. The small statue of Eve adorning the throne on which Mary sits reminds her that she was called the second Eve (the first to bring sin into the world, the second to salvation). The throne is also decorated with performances by Cain killing Abel - the prefiguration of the Passion of Christ, and Samson defeating the Lion - the symbol of the liberation of mankind from the power of hell by Jesus.
Researcher David G. Carter discovered in St. George's reflection of the man, probably the author of the picture. Bibliography
