Valentin Thilo, born 19 April 1607 in Konigsberg, died 27 July 1662) is a Lutheran theologian, professor of rhetoric and religious poet. His father was Valentin Thilo; Both parents lost during the plague in 1620 when he was 13 years old. They were raised by the pastor and professor Georg Mylius and professor Funk. In 1624 he began studying theology at the University of Albrecht in Konigsberg, and studied rhetoric and history. One of his teachers was Samuel Fuchs. In the years 1632-1634 he studied in Leiden. In 1634 he obtained a master's degree in Königsberg and became professor of rhetoric in the same year. He was a Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and was twice Dean of the University.
He belonged to a poetic circle centered around Simon Dach and, like his father, wrote religious songs. He is credited with the popular Adventist myth of the Ernst, the Menschenkinder (Seriously Prepared), and the lesser known Groß ist, Herr, deine Güte, Sehr groß ist deine Treu (1639) and Herr, unser Gott, wenn ich betrachte (1639). Among his Latin works there are panegyrics in honor of the Polish kings of Władysław IV and Jan Kazimierz. Bibliography Authoritative control (person):
