Walter Ehrenstein (born 1899, died 1961) is a German professor of psychology. It is best known for discovering the meaning of color for highlighting a figure from the background using illusion of radial lines.

In 1941, Ehrenstein noticed that the circular area framed by a beam of radially outward lines was seen as clearly brighter than the spotlight, though neither he nor the circle defining its boundary were matched by any physical stimulus.
