County Loon
Loon County Coat of Arms
Loon County (governor: Graafschap Loon, Fr. Comté de Looz) was a state in the Holy Roman Empire, in present-day Belgium.
The county was first mentioned in 1040. Originally the capital was Borgloon, but about 1200 the capital was transferred to Hasselt. In 1366 it became part of the Diocese of Liège. Loon remained a separate district with its diocese. When the diocese was annexed by France in 1795, the county was also liquidated and attached to the department of Meuse-Inférieure. The most important cities in Loon were Beringen, Bilzen, Borgloon, Bree, Hamont, Hasselt, Herk-de-Stad, Maaseik, Peer and Stokkem.
