Elephantiasis (Latin elephantiasis) - severe swelling of the limbs due to impaired drainage of lymph (lymph). Caused by a lymph node, massive lymph node obstruction or smaller lymph vessels. It is most often found in extensive metastases of breast cancer to axillary lymph nodes or after surgical removal. It can also be a result of scarring after injury, irradiation, surgery and infection with lymph nodes in the lymph nodes (tropical countries only).

Elephantine is also caused by the nematode Wuchereria bancrofti (Bancroft filament). The females of this nematode live in lymph nodes, there are so called. microtubules at night, larvae appearing in the blood at night to get into the blood sucked through the mosquito into his intestine. Inside the mosquito larvae grow and settle at the base of his dagger. At night, Wuchurerii larvae reside in the blood vessels of the internal organs.
