Leo Brancaleone
Leone Brancaleone (August 25, 1224) - Italian Catholic priest. He was a member of the regular congregation of San Frediano di Lucca. In June 1200 Pope Innocent III appointed him Cardinal Deacon S. Lucia in Septisolio, and in March 1202 promoted him to the rank of Cardinal of the Presbyterian Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. He signed Papal Bull issued between 4 July 1200 and 23 May 1224. In 1204 he was a papal legate in Bulgaria, where he negotiated with Tsar Kanyan the union of that country with Rome and crowned him king in Latin ceremonial. In 1207 and 1209 he served as a lieutenant in Germany, where together with Cardinal Ugolino of Ostia he tried to mediate between the two pretenders to Otto of Saxony and Philip Swabski. Legate in Lombardy (together with Cardinal Raniero Capocci) in the summer of 1216. He was a friend of Francis of Assisi and patron of the community of the Valdens, who under the leadership of Durand of Huesca in 1208 reconciled with the Catholic Church. Bibliography
