The Duchy of Spoleto was founded in the south of Umbria around 572-575 by the Duke of Faroald I. The name comes from the town of Spoleto, which is its capital.
From 782 the Frankom was subject to the expansion of Charles the Great. From 883 to the Duchy of Spoleto and Camerino. In 967 Otton II merged Duchy with Kapu and Benewent (also temporarily). In the years 989, 1043-1056 and from 1057 was part of the Duchy of Tuscany.
In the thirteenth century, it was under the influence of the papacy.
