Gate of the altar

The altar latch - in the churches, a central image of the patron of the temple is usually placed in the central part of the altar.

In the old days, the altar was often erected in such a way that it was in the image part and above it "three-dimensional".

This consisted in the fact that the main image was permanently placed in the deeper part of the "window of the altar", whereas in front of it, a second, usually less valuable "venom" image was placed on the side guides. Mounted movably, moving vertically in the "window" of the altar pulled in or lowered with a suitable rope - tendon - available for operation at the rear of the altar.

The faithful observed the image in the altar on a daily basis, the main picture was shown to them during the ceremony and during the festive days when the raised "daily" image was slipped and hidden in the elaborate, decorated top of the altar.

Nowadays it happens that the bar is often a painting of high artistic or historical value is dismantled from the altar and displayed as a separate image in the temple.
