Mechitar of Sebasty (Mchitar, Mkhitar, Mochtor, born 7 February 1676 in Seba, today Sivasa, died 16 April 1749 at San Lazzaro degli Armeni near Venice) - Armenian monk, philosopher and writer, founder of the Mechitary Order. < / p>
He was born into a wealthy family as Peter Manuk. The name "Mechitar" (comforter) was his monastic name, which he chose, choosing the life of a monk. At the age of 20 he was ordained a priest and began to gather disciples around him. Together with his 9 pupils in 1701 he set up a congregation which set up, apart from the typically religious affairs, the educational activity among Armenians. Mechitar and his disciples left the Ottoman state and settled in Modon (Methoni), a Venetian colony at the time of the Peloponnese. Thanks to Mechitara's efforts, the congregation received papal approval in 1712, and he himself was named his first abbot. Mechitar decided to create the second house of the congregation in Venice and for this purpose with part of the brothers went there in 1715. At that time Modon was conquered by the Turks and the monastery was destroyed. Thanks to the efforts of the abbot, the nuns received from Venice a small island of San Lazzaro, which they formally took possession of in 1717. The monastery and church they built became the new home of the Order, and at the same time, thanks to the abbot's efforts, an important center of Armenian culture. The most important works of Mechitara are also included in it, including: Bibliography Authoritative control (person):
