Chapel of the Little Royal Castle in Warsaw, where the royal scepter of Stanisław August Poniatowski is kept

Stanislaw August Poniatowski's scepter - private scepter of King Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski kept at the Royal Castle in Warsaw

The scepter was made in the second half of the 18th century. It consists of three octagonal sanded aquamarine sticks, gold-framed in the form of acanthus leaves. It is topped with a gold floral goblet, and at the bottom is an aquamarine sponge with six gold bracelets. History of the scepter

Until 1798 the scepter was owned by King Stanisław August Poniatowski. After his death, the pope Paul and I Romanov placed it in the Kremlin collection in Moscow. After the Polish-Bolshevik war under the Treaty of Riga in 1921, the scepter returned to Poland and found itself in the collection of the Royal Castle in Warsaw. In 1939 on the eve of the outbreak of World War II was deposited in the treasury of Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego in Warsaw. In September 1939, however, he was taken away and taken to France. Originally stored at the Polish embassy in Paris, later it was sent to the Polish Library. In 1940, the royal scepter was added to the Wawel collection, which was located in Aubusson. From there in the spring of 1940, together with other national treasures, it was first transported to Great Britain and then to Canada and hidden in the Canadian government's Ottawa archives. In 1944, it was deposited in the Bank of Montreal branch in Ottawa, where it remained until 1959. Later returned to Poland and was kept at the National Museum in Warsaw. After the reconstruction of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, it was again an exhibit of this institution. Stanislaw August Poniatowski's scepter is kept in the Chapel of the Little Royal Castle in Warsaw in a glass display with the Jewel of the Republic. Literature
