Toda people


Toddler hut in the Nilgiri mountains Todd (Toda) is an ethnic group in southern India, inhabiting mainly the Nilgiri mountains in the state of Tamil Nadu. In the 1980s, the number of Todds was estimated at about 1 000. people. The toads use the language of the Dravidian toda, but they are anthropologically closer to Indo-European peoples. They live in villages located at about 2 thousand. m.p.m., above the rainforest limit. Their traditional occupation is buffalo grazing.

Todo's social structure is based on endogamous clans, consisting of exogamous lineages. Until recently, the Todd practiced polyandry. Bibliography
