CANON (biotechnology)
CANON (fully autotrophic nitrogen removal process over nitrite) - a technology for the removal of ammonium nitrate from sewage carried out in a single autotrophic bioreactor.
CANON technology is conducted at an oxygen concentration of less than 0.5%. Under conditions such as in the bioreactor, both aerobic nitrosobacteria and anaerobic bacteria, belonging to the order Planctomycetes: Brocadia and Kuenenia, proliferate. They simultaneously react with oxygen and anaerobic ammonium oxidation, with the release of molecular nitrogen:
NH4 + 1,5 O2 → NO2 + 2 H + H2O
NH4 + 1,3 NO2 → 1,02 N2 + 0,26 NO3 + 2 H2O
In sum, these two reactions look like this:
NH4 + 1,3 NO2 → 0,435 N2 + 0.13 NO3 + 1,3 H2O + 1.4 H Bibliography
