Luis Miramontes


Luis E. Miramontes ca. 1953 Luis Ernesto Miramontes Cárdenas (born March 16, 1925 in Tepic, Mexico, September 13, 2004) is a Mexican chemist, one of the inventors of the synthetic progestogen used in the first contraceptive pills.

He graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He then joined the Mexican chemical company Syntex. There he collaborated with Carl Djerassi and George Rosenkranz. Working under their direction, he obtained (October 15, 1951) a synthetic noretisterone, used in some of the first oral contraceptives.
