Simon Leys
Simon Leys - literary pseudonym Pierre Ryckmans (born September 28, 1935 in Brussels, died August 10, 2014 in Canberra), Belgian sinologist, literary critic and writer.
Pierre Ryckmans studied law at the Catholic University of Leuven (Louvain), then the language, literature and Chinese arts in Taiwan. In 1970 he settled in Australia. At first he lectured on Chinese literature in Canberra, then from 1987-1993 he was professor of sinology at the University of Sydney. He is a member of the Australian Academy of Humanities and the Royal Academy of French Literature (Académie Royale de Littérature Française). It is best known as the author of monographs on the Chinese Cultural Revolution and a translator of Chinese literature. He writes in French and English. His work was rewarded in Australia, France and Great Britain. In 2004 he received the prestigious Prix mondial Cino Del Duca.
The nickname "Simon Leys", which he received prior to the publication of Mao Zedong's book Les habits neufs du président Mao in 1971, comes from the title character of Victor Segalen's novel René Leys (Paris, 1921), about young Belgu in Beijing 1911. Publications Authoritative control (person):
