Ghaty

Ghat Desaswamedh in Varanasi at dawn

Ghats (Devanagari: घाट Bengali: ঘাট, transliteration ghaţ, literally degrees) - a series of stone steps leading down to the river. Occurs in many places in Asia.

Having gone through ghats, followers of Hinduism do in water, praying, ritually purifying themselves from negative karma (sins). In Varanasi and other banks of the river on stone ghats there is a Hindu funeral ceremony by burnt corpses and dumping of remnants into the river. The term also appears in the names of the mountains located on the outskirts of the Dekan plateau: Eastern Ghats and Western Ghats.
