The Great Cemetery in Riga


The Great Cemetery in Riga (Lielie kapi, Großer Friedhof in Riga) is the oldest Latvian cemetery in the suburbs of Riga, an architectural monument of historical character. History

It was founded in 1773, when Empress Catherine II issued a memorandum for the transfer of cemeteries within the city to their suburbs. Up until 1944, there were mainly German residents of Riga. Albert von Buxhövden, founder of Riga, whose remains were moved from one of the Old Town churches, found here the last resting place.

After the Second World War a large part of the cemetery was destroyed, after it was transformed into a city park, but survived relatively many gravestones, among others. Krišjānisa Baronsa (1777) and Krišjānisa Valdemārs. Famous rice buried in the cemetery
