Balázs Étienne


Étienne Balázs (born 24 January 1905 in Budapest, died 29 November 1963 in Paris) was an eminent Hungarian sinologist. <Étienne Balázs spent his childhood in Budapest. There he also began studies of philosophy and the history of religion. He was interested in Taoism and Buddhism. He has been studying in Berlin since 1923 under the direction of the well known German sinologist Otto Franke. In 1930 he defended his doctoral thesis from China's economic history during the Tang dynasty. In 1935 he had to leave Germany for anti-Nazi views. He went to Paris, and in 1940, before the town was occupied by Hitler, to the village of Meauzac in the south of France. There was the end of the war. In 1950 he became director of the National Center for Scientific Research (Center National de la Recherche Scientifique) in Paris. He studied the economic history of China on the basis of dynasties.
