Hudson Soft HuC6280

Hudson Soft HuC6280 - The 8-bit Hudson Soft Japanese microprocessor installed mainly in the TurboGrafx-16 console. This is an improved version of the WDC 65C02.

The processor operated at two speeds: 1.7897725 MHz and 7.15909 MHz. He had a 65C02 kernel with some additional instructions. Other features included:

The HuC6280 has 64 KB of logical address space and 2 MB of physical address space. In order to access all of the memory contents, the system used a single MMU that shared memory space into so-called. segments (pages). The logical address space is as follows: page 0 → $0000-$1FFF page 1 → $2000-$3FFF page 2 → $4000-$5FFF page 3 → $6000-$7FFF page 4 → $8000-$9FFF page 5 → $A000-$BFFF page 6 → $C000-$DFFF page 7 → $E000-$FFFF

Each page was associated with an 8-bit MPR0-7 register. In order to access it, two instructions were used:

The programmable sound generator has 6 channels working in pairs. They had the following functionality: 0-1 - Waveform generation Frequency modulation (channel 1 muted) 2-3 - Production only 4-5 - Preparation of the course Production of white noise

White noise was used to simulate drums, instruments and effects such as explosions, etc. Alternatively, each channel could be individually switched to Direct D / A mode, where the data was directly to the mixer, allowing for a more complex form of sound, such as speech. Unfortunately, this caused more difficulty in programming, and consequently required more CPU load.
