Metallography (polygraphy)

Metallography in the meaning of printing technology, preceded by typography, was developed around 1430 based on techniques previously known by goldsmiths, engravers and engravers. Used in Rhineland and the Netherlands; Johannes Gutenberg applied it in Strasbourg between 1434 and 1439. Compared to the twenty years later typography, metallography had the disadvantage of having difficulty setting the molds uniformly. This was an important step forward in comparison with previous technologies (eg woodcutting and xylography), using non-durable wood as a printing mold, because it introduced much more durable metal - hence the career of lead alloys in printing.
