Ribat

Ribat in Sousse

Ribat (Arabic: رباط) - It is a military fortified Muslim monastery, usually located near the border. The building was surrounded by a wall with a tower, a prayer room (eg ribat in Tunisia in the city of Susa, hence the frequent conversion of later ribatos into mosques). Their rise is tied to the duty of running a holy war and guarding the state borders.

This term in Iran has been used over time to describe the fortified caravans.

The most famous Tunisian ribat is located in Monastir, where it features films such as "English Patient", "Life of Brian", "Matrix 2" and Polish "In the desert and in the wilderness."

From the name al murabitin (inhabitants of the monastery) comes the name Almoravids - the name of three Berber dynasties. Bibliography
