The Nipah virus is a paramyxovirus, usually classified, together with the Hendr virus, of the genus Henipavirus. These viruses are transmitted by Pteropus-type fruit bats, which are characterized by large genomes and the severe effects of infection of humans and domestic animals. The name of the virus comes from one of the Malaysian villages, Sungai Nipah. The first epidemic was reported in 1997 in Ipoh, with sick people in contact with sick animals. These cases were initially mistakenly identified as Japanese encephalitis.
