Chawki Deif


Deif Deif (born 13 January 1910 in Dumyat, died 10 March 2005), Egyptian literary historian.

He studied the Koran in a rural school, then the humanities at the University of Cairo. In 1935 he graduated from university and worked there. In 1942 he defended his doctorate on the basis of his work Artistic genres in Arabic poetry. This publication has become one of the leading textbook theories of literature at Arab universities. For more than 50 years Deif has been a lecturer at the Cairo University, enjoying a reputation for authority in both literature and Arab history. In the 1960s he initiated the publication of the multi-volume History of Arabic Literature.

He was a member and since 1996 he has been president of the Arabic Language Academy.
