Datis (Datys or Dates) - one of the chiefs in the armies of the great Persian king - Darius I. His origin was Medem (a relative of the Persians). He participated in suppressing the Ionian insurrection, perhaps in a maritime expedition against Rhodes in 495 BC. and possibly he was the commander of the Persian fleet during the decisive battle at Cape Lade in 494 BC. In 490 p.n.e. Artafernes flew a Persian fleet during the First Persian War with the Greeks. During this campaign Naxos, Delos and Eretria won. The highlight of the expedition was the Battle of Marathon near the city of Marathon about 40 km from Athens. The Persians were defeated by the Athenians, commanded by Miltiades and retreated from Greece. However, they retained the islands in the Aegean Sea, and probably King Darius I did not treat the expedition as a failure - Artafernes, and perhaps Datis did not lose his favor.

According to the account of the usually unreliable Katyzjas Datis died under the Marathon, however, it is not possible to verify this information. Datis had two sons: Harmamitres and Titaeus, who led the expedition on the Xerxes I expedition to Greece at 480 p.n.e. Bibliography
