Alfred Obaliński


Alfred Obaliński (born November 15, 1843 in Brzeżany, died August 18, 1898) - Polish professor, surgeon physician.

Curriculum vitae

Born in Brzeżany, he studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the Jagiellonian University. In 1868 he received his doctorate in medicine and in 1870 he became doctor of surgery and ophthalmology. Until 1870 he was an assistant professor Antoni Bryk. In the years 1870-1897 he was the primary (ordained) of St. John's Hospital. Lazarus in Cracow. From 1888 he was a professor at the Jagiellonian University. In 1897 he became head of the Jagiellonian University's Surgical Clinic.

He focused mainly on plastic surgery, orthopedics, abdominal surgery, urology, and thyroid surgery. He developed his own method of skin grafting, operated on the birth defects of the skeleton in children. He first developed the use of the Gigli ball for trepanation (1897).

Obalinski was the first to draw attention to the symptoms of increased appendicitis in the first phase of the intestinal obstruction.

He was involved in urinary tract surgery, where he introduced his own method of fixing the kidneys. As the first in Poland, he used X-ray for surgical diagnosis. The first photo was taken at the Department of Physics of the Jagiellonian University with the help of prof. Karol Olszewski's chemistry in 1896, one year after Röntgen's discovery.

In 1896, he was the first to perform gastric and transection. He was the founder and president of the Krakow Voluntary Rescue Society. commemoration February 17, 1900 in the Church of Sts. Anna unveiled a commemorative plaque made by prof. Dauna, which is placed on the left side of the altar. The frame of the Pińczów marble surrounds the bronze bust. At the bottom of the table there was inscription "Alfred Obaliński, Professor of the Jagiellonian University, born on December 15, 1843 in Brzeżany, died on July 18, 1898 in Cracow." This stone was laid down by colleagues of the Cracow Medical University and the Jagiellonian University professors. " Bibliography
