External motivation

Extrinsic motivation - Engaging in a given activity to achieve external consequences (as opposed to internal motivation).

Behavior is only an instrument to achieve something else.

Examples of externally motivated actions:

There are premises for the claim that when a person understands his or her actions as being motivated externally, he does not at the same time notice that it can be motivated internally, leading to loss of pleasure.

This type of motivation is used, for example, to treat alcoholics. An outside court may be a court judgment for treatment, a re-formulation of values and a sense of worth to be treated for.
