Gideon Brand van Zyl
Gideon Brand van Zyl (1873-1956) was the Governor of the ZPA, the first born in South Africa. The governor functioned from 1945 to 1950.
Van Zyl was born in Cape Town in 1873 as the son of a prominent lawyer. After graduating in 1898, Gideon joined the family business. During the First War, Gideon served as an adviser to the War Department.
During the First World War, Van Zyl was recruited as a recruiting director in the Cape Town area.
In 1915, van Zyl joined the South African Union Party of which he was a member of the Cape Town City Council until 1918. Then von Zyl was a Member of the Parliament until 1942. Between 1934 and 1942 Gideon was the Speaker of the Parliament. Edward Jansen replaced him.
In 1942-1945, he was the administrator of Cape Town and in mid-1945 he was appointed governor of South Africa. He served until 1950.
Gideon van Zyl was married to Marie Fraser whom he married in 1900. He died in 1956 Bibliography
