Jonathan Schaeffer
Jonathan Schaeffer (born 1957 in Toronto) is a Canadian computer scientist known for making checkers, poker and chess.
Schaeffer is a professor of computer science at the University of Alberta. In 1989, he created an English checker game, called Chinook, which in 1992 and in 1994 held matches with then-world champion Marion Tinsley. The first game ended with Tinsley winning (4 wins, 34 draws and two losses). Tinsley's second match was for walkover because of his health.
On July 19, 2007, Shaeffer's Science magazine published an article in which he reported that the Chinook database contained complete information about all 500 trillion (5x10) settings possible for the pawns on the board. The program's creators have proven that in the event that no player makes an error, the checklist must end with a draw.
Schaeffer is also one of the creators of the Polaris program, taking part in poker tournaments with professional players.
