Ziri Ibn Manad

Ziri ibn Manad (-971) - founder of the Zirid dynasty in the Maghreb. Ziri ibn Manad was the leader of the Berber tribe of the Sanhedrines, who defeated Abu Yazid (943-947) in the alliance with the Fatimids. He was awarded the Governor of Western Provinces, whose area roughly corresponds to modern Algeria in the north of the Sahara.

Ziri built a 935 mansion in Ashir south of later Algiers. His efforts were supported by the Fatimids by sending craftsmen and architects. His son Buluggin ibn Ziri founded the cities of Algiers, Miliana and Medea (Lamdija) and rebuilt the ruins destroyed during the rebellion.

Ziri ibn Manad died in a battle against the rebellious Berber tribes in Morocco. His son, Buluggin ibn Ziri, became his successor in 972 and became viceroy of Ifrikiji (972-984) when the Fatimids moved their mansion to Egypt.
