Dongting Hu
Dongting Hu is a lake in the south-east of China, in the Hunan Province of the Cangguan Plain (part of the Central Highlands and Lower Yangtze River). China's second largest freshwater reservoir, formerly covering an area of 3900 km² and a depth of 31 m. It lies at an altitude of 34.5 m. Dongting Hu and the rivers flowing into it
Dongting Hu is a natural retention reservoir that prevents the flow of rivers flowing into it, including the largest one: the Yangtze River.
The lake in the past was located within the great land of the marsh called Yunmong. Once the lake was much larger and was the largest freshwater lake in China. Gradually it began to shrink as a result of river sedimentation, and this process has significantly accelerated since 1949 as a result of the increase in the melioration of the Yunmong marshes and their dehumidification under the fields - since then the lake region has been flooded. The largest in 1998, after the government of China launched a "grain for water" campaign involving the relocation of crops to other areas, the lake increased again by 20 percent.
The lake shrinks very quickly. In 1949 it had an area of 4350 km², and in 1976 it was only 1840 km². In September 2009 it had an area of 1338.57 km², in mid-October its area decreased by about 40 percent to 537.84 km². Since 2001, the area of the reservoir has been reduced by about 16 km² annually. In the 70s, with a surface area of 2820 km², it had a depth of 31 m.
