gPhoto is a free library for digital cameras. Currently (November 2009) gPhoto2 supports over 1100 different models of digital cameras. It is available under the GNU GPL. gPhoto works on GNU / Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and other Unix systems.

Projects under gPhoto:

gPhoto supports PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol).

Numerous digital cameras not supported by gPhoto, can be operated via USB mass storage protocol, fully supported by GNU / Linux. This protocol is designed for USB drives, so there are some limitations to this.
