Lung hypoplasia

Hypoplasia of the lung (Latin hypoplasia pulmonis) - congenital malformation consisting of various degrees of non-development of the vascular, bronchial and parenchymal elements of the lung tissue. It may be asymptomatic and may be detected by accident, but it usually produces signs of infection and cirrhosis. Can affect one lung, both or single lobe. Diagnosis is based on X-ray, bronchoscopy and bronchography or angiography. Treatment of the defect involves the resection of diseased tissue. Prognosis largely depends on the presence of other defects. Bibliography
