Real time clock
DALLAS real time clock
Real-Time Clock RTC is a component of computer systems for counting time regardless of machine state (work, lock, shutdown). It is installed almost in all personal computers, servers and many embedded systems. PLC.
Real-time clock construction can be based on a simple chip that counts pulses from the quartz generator. The RTC is powered by a battery that allows it to work not only when the computer is off or when it is completely disconnected from the power supply. Current installed batteries have a lifetime of more than 10 years and are either integrated in a single clock casing or are mounted in suitable cradles on the motherboard. Less often used batteries - for example laptops and other devices, where it is more difficult to replace the battery.
Real-time clock can also generate a periodic signal for the processor and other computer components, such as to measure the internal time of the computer. The hardware of the computer system then transforms the results of the counter system and stores them in the form accepted and understood by humans (seconds, minutes, hours, day, day of week, month, year). Computer software can read and modify this fixed and updated RTC time. Thanks to the signal generated by the real time clock, called clock interrupt, it is also possible to have time division systems. The independence of RTC in a computer system is often used to create a watchdog system.
